| I have over a dozen spent airbags hanging around the house as decoration. Funny most people dont appreciate it. Ford is easy, if you provide some more details then I can help you even more. If I can find airbags at a local pick n pull place then they cost 150 for a pair, with the clock spring. If I goto a regular junkyard they run more like 500 for a set with the clockspring. While all cars use clocksprings(its a coil of spring wound tape that spins allowing your various electrical impluses to be transmistted while turning the steering wheel) when ford airbags blow they do not destroy the clockspring, at least not from the heat like on most cars, however on one taruas airbag I did the clockspring was VERY used, and the impact cuased it to break internally, I have never come across this since then. Airbag install is quite easy, first off get your new bags, get the old ones outta there, disconnect the negative battery cable, let it set for at least 10 mins(just to be on the safe side, I have replaced airbags without doing this, but be on the safe side anyway) connect the new airbags, make sure the key is to off, connect the negative battery cable, get in the backseat, and turn the key to on. no boom? good. I have never had an accidental airbag deployment when installing them, the way that this system work is by sending a signal when the activeate airbag signal is sent from the SRS computer. The newer ford airbag systems(1993+, and eayler years that have duals) utilize a 2 airbag sensor system, one senes impact event(like hitting a pedestrain, deer, mailbox, cow, ditch, another car.... and so on) the other one senses negative acceleration(decceleration in other words). when both of these sensors are triggered the airbag computer sends out a signal to the airbags to deploy. Now the airbags only have 2 wires running into them, hot, and a ground. However the airbag computer is able to sense that an airbag has been deployed by the OHM (resistance) reading that comes back through, the computer sends a trickle chrage throught the airbag to test if it is there, basically this means that airbag system knows when a airbag is installed, or when one has been deployed, or if there is a bad connection in the system, such as a bad clockspring. Before installing new airbags check the sensors to make sure they are not physically damaged. As far as driving the car untill you get a chance to inspect it, its fine, just cut the extra airbag material out of the way. be careful with the drivers airbag and the horn button, depending on the model the horn button can still work after deployment, and can be accidentaly activated causing quite an embarassing moment with the narly looking biker dude in front of you that looks like hes packing(its Texas, cmon he is going outta the country!)
